    When you’re not out discovering Madikwe’s many wonders, take a moment to admire Paul Augustinus’ vibrant landscapes and wildlife portraits, Robert Glen’s magnificent bronze sculpture of an agile lioness attempting to bring down a leaping impala or the beautiful bronze sculptures by Dylan Lewis which are on display in the Mateya gallery. Or adjourn to the library which houses a rare collection of African literature dating back to the turn of the 19th century.

    Brunches and lunches are served on the Lodge’s main deck while evening meals are served in the graceful dining room or on the wooden viewing deck circling the fabulous “fire core” overlooking the vibrant wilderness below.

    Conclude your dinner on the perfect note with a choice brandy, cognac or single malt whiskey and a cigar from the humidor as you marvel at the majesty of the star-filled night skies above.

    For a unique dining experience, retire to the seclusion of the wine cellar which is available on request. Al fresco picnic lunches are also provided by prior arrangement.

    When business calls, Mateya’s bush boardroom which is furnished with full internet and e-mail amenities is the perfect spot to host a meeting or connect with the outside world.

    Naturally, the chief purpose of a visit to Mateya is to explore the incredible diversity of fauna and flora that call the world-renowned Madikwe Game Reserve home. Activities include game drives in custom-built 4X4 vehicles, thrilling nature trails, and birdwatching trips accompanied by qualified field guides and talented Koi San trackers.

    With a maximum of four guests per drive, you are assured of a memorable bushveld experience that focuses on your individual interests. For an even more exclusive safari encounter, Mateya does provide a two-person game drive on request.

    Regarding junior guests, Mateya Safari Lodge welcomes children aged nine years and older, but children under the age of 16 are not permitted on the nature trails. However, guests of all ages are welcome should you book the Lodge on an exclusive-use basis.

Terms & Conditions
  • 25% deposit for the total accommodation is required 1-14 days after making the booking. A non-refundable deposit of 25% required for all reservations made between 20 December and 01 January 2018 & 15 December and 10 January 2019 in any given year, within 48 hours of making the booking
  • 50% deposit for the total accommodation is required 31-60 days prior to arrival
  • Full pre-payment will be due 30 days prior to arrival date or if the booking is made 30 days or less of the arrival date, full payment is requires within 48 hours of making the booking.
  • Please note that Mateya Safari Lodge reserves the right to sell accommodation held without the relevant deposit to a cash buyer
  • Following deposit request, a reasonable time period will be allowed for the necessary deposit to be settled
  • All reservations must please be made in writing, i.e. by fax, e-mail or letter
  • All changes to reservations, i.e. dates, number of guests, etc. must please be notified in writing
Cancellation Policy
  • Should a cancellation be received 61 days prior to arrival, the deposit will be refunded in full unless the reservation falls between 20 December '18 and 01 January '19 &  15 December '19 and 10 January '20 , in which case the deposit is non refundable.
  • Reservations cancelled 31-60 days prior to arrival will be charged a 50% cancellation fee of the total accommodation amount
  • Reservations cancelled 1-30 days prior to arrival will be charged a 90% cancellation fee of the total accommodation amount
  • All cancellations must be made in writing
Guide / Pilot Rates
  • Bonafide guides/pilots/tour leaders/drivers will be accommodated at a rate of R 1 200 pp per night in specially allocated accommodation
  • This rate includes accommodation and all meals taken with the Mateya staff
  • If guests would like their guide to join them for meals, there will be an additional charge of R 400 per day
  • Pilots or guides partaking in game drives or other activities will be at managements discretion
Children Policy
  • The minimum age for children accepted at Mateya Safari Lodge is 9 years of age, unless sole use of the lodge (5 suites) is booked, there will be no age limit in place
  • Children 13 years & under will be charged 50% of adult sharing rate
  • , unless child stays in a suite on it's self, in such case the child will be charged the full adult rate
  • Only children 13 years & under can be accommodated on a triple basis in one room

Directions & Transport
Best Route
The drive from Johannesburg/ Pretoria to Mateya Safari Lodge is a scenic four (4) and a half hour journey.
The suggested route is: Krugersdorp, Magaliesburg, Derby, Koster, Swartruggens and then Zeerust. There is a toll road near Swartruggens, please note that there is a toll fee per vehicle on this route. In Zeerust, turn right at the First National Bank, where you will see a direction board showing the route to Madikwe Game Reserve and Gaborone.From Zeerust it is 85km to Madikwe Game Reserve, turn right into the Reserve at the Abjaterskop Gate. Please note that the speed limit in the Reserve is 40km/hour, watch out for speed humps!
Follow the main road for 11km until you reach a T- junction, turn left at the junction and drive for a further 2km and turn left again following the Derdepoort signs. Drive for approximately 12km until you reach a four-way intersection, turn left here following the Mateya sign, drive for 1km and turn left again at the reception sign. This road will lead into Mateya Safari Lodge.

Transport
By Air
Madikwe Air Charter in conjunction with Federal Air offers daily return schedule shuttle flights from Johannesburg International Airport (O.R Thambo) to Madikwe Game Reserve airstrip. Please contact Mateya Safari Lodge reservations for flight times and schedules. A Mateya Safari Lodge representative will welcome you and transfer you to the lodge. This is approx. 10 minutes drive.

The airstrip runs east to west (11/290) and is approximately 1200m in length. All Charter and Shuttle flights as well as Road transfers can be booked via the lodge

The average temperature throughout the year is a moderate 18 degrees Centigrade. The summer months, between September and April, range in temperature from 16 degrees Centigrade to 35 degrees Centigrade.The winder period, May through August, fairs more temperately at between 0 degrees Centigrade and 22 degrees Centigrade.Madikwe Game Reserve is classified as a summer rainfall region with the highest levels expected between November and February and the lowest between June and September.

Game Drives

Tackling the African bush in custom-built 4×4 game drive vehicles offer guests the thrill of getting close to game and tracking over vast distances. With a maximum of four guests per drive each guest is assured the personal care and attention of our rangers who will introduce you to the intricate and wonderful features of the reserve.

Mateya’s vehicles are equipped with the following unique features:

  •  Spacious pouches for books and photographic equipment.
  •  Shade cover and side flaps offering protection against wind and rain.
  •  Comfy warm blankets in case of cold weather.
  •  Flasks for hot coffee on those early morning excursions.

The Madikwe Game Reserve district is home to the Tswana culture and language. However, travelers will find that English, although only third in terms of language preference among the population, is nonetheless widely understood and considered to be South Africa’s international language of choice, spoken by all staff at the lodge.

PRECAUTIONS
A major advantage for tourists to the Madikwe Game Reserve region is that it has been classified as a Malaria-free area.

The reserve’s only perennial river, the Marico, is also free of all bilharzias. However, bathing in the Marico is prohibited due to the presence of hippo and crocodile, both of which nonetheless provide excellent game viewing opportunities. An additional advantage is that the water in the region is perfectly safe for drinking.

In order to make your stay as comfortable as possible, we suggest the following preparedness tips:
  •  UV protection sun block, lip creams, and sun hat
  •  Comfortable walking shoes for tracking safaris
  •  Prescription medicines
  •  During the winter (May to September) the mornings and evenings can be cold. Therefore we suggest you bring along a bush jacket and warm clothing for game drives and light clothing for the days.
  •  During the summer (October to April) light weight cotton clothing will provide both adequate shielding from the sun’s UV rays and comfort in the heat.
