Jaci's Safari Lodge | Madikwe Game Reserve

4 Star Madikwe Game Reserve image

Jaci's Safari Lodge is tucked away in a grove of Tamboti trees on the banks of the Groot Marico River, midway along Madikwe Game Reserve’s eastern border. This remarkable family-friendly Lodge is the creation of Jan and Jaci and is sure to delight guests with its eclectic décor, bold use of colours and textures, and intriguing collection of artefacts.

Designed to be the heartbeat of Jaci’s Safari Lodge, the main area curves around an ancient termite mound. It is in the process of an extreme makeover, and the resulting hub will feature an elegant lounge, glorious copper fireplace, loft bar, open-plan kitchen, indoor and outdoor dining areas, all proudly reflecting the Lodge’s welcoming ambience.

Jaci’s Safari Lodge offers guests a few accommodation options inspired by the pristine  natural surroundings: six classic safari-style Tented Suites, two Starbed Suites, and two exclusive Family Suites, namely the Safari Suite and Nare Suite.

With shaggy thatched roofs, canvas roll-up panels, low stone walls, andlarge tent windows, a stay in the spacious two-person Tented Suites guarantees you’ll enjoy a truly unforgettable African safari experience. Each of the Tented Suites features a lavish handcrafted mosaic bath, outdoor shower, and elevated viewing deck plus air conditioning and a ceiling fan. What’s more, stretcher beds can be set up for families with young children.

The two newly built Starbed Suites epitomise a romantic bushveld hideaway. Set over two levels these beautifully appointed suites are ideal for honeymooners and couples and offer guests a choice of sleeping indoors or under the starry night skies. Each suite boasts two king-sized beds, intimate lounge area with comfortable leather couch, writing desk, personal bar, two indoor bathrooms, an outdoor shower, spacious viewing deck as well as underfloor heating, air-conditioning, and ceiling fan.

Jaci’s Safari Suite can accommodate up to eight guests (four adults and four children), making it the perfect destination for larger families or groups. This magnificent Suite has a master bedroom, with a king-sized bed, and adjoining children’s room which share an outdoor shower and open-plan bathroom. Across the passage is a lounge with adjoining guest room and an upstairs loft bedroom with two single beds which again share ablution facilities. The common area of the Safari Suite features a comfortable lounge, kitchenette, bar, underfloor heating, air-conditioner, and ceiling fan. The highlight of the expansive private deck is the central fire pit with circular seating area leading out to a daybed/“starpod,” and an inviting swimming pool.

Jaci’s Nare Suite is named for the resident buffalo bull that frequents the waterhole that it overlooks. This sublime Suite can accommodate up to six guests (four adults and two children) making it a popular destination choice for smaller families or group retreats. The Nare Suite offers a master with a king-sized bed and double-sleeper guest bedroom, each with a lavish en-suite bathroom, outdoor shower, plus an upstairs loft with two single beds, toilet, and hand basin. The main hub of the Nare Suite has a lounge, kitchenette, bar, underfloor heating, air-conditioner, and ceiling fan. The custom-made deck features an outdoor dining area and leads out to a daybed/“starpod” and plunge pool.

Also, guests booked into the Safari, and Nare Suites have the services of a dedicated game viewing vehicle and guides at their disposal for the duration of their stay.

Jaci’s Safari Lodge sees providing guests with ample opportunities to explore the wonders of Madikwe Game Reserve a priority. Activities include twice-daily game drives, night drives which focus on astronomy, and walking safaris accompanied by the Lodge’s certified bush guides. For children four years and younger, the Lodge’s educational "jungle drive" is sure to be a big hit.

Guests can also enjoy dusk-to- dawn access to the submerged Terrapin Hide, giving you the chance to get eye-level with the resident bird- and wildlife. Avid nature enthusiasts will no doubt be thrilled to learn about Jaci’s specialised Birding, Photographic, and Conservation Safaris, each hosted by specialists in their fields. There is even camera equipment available for daily rental.

When it comes to enjoying some downtime, you can unwind poolside amid the lush green grass or soak up the tranquility of this incredible haven from the hammock on the bank of the Groot Marico River. Early risers might be fortunate enough to glimpse of Bush Babies returning to roost in the adjacent Tamboti trees or experience the morning call of the resident Francolins.

If it’s a little self-indulgence you’re seeking, treat yourself to a massage at the Masala Spa. Alternatively, work up a sweat in the Lodge’s small on-site gym against the backdrop of magnificent Madikwe bushveld. There is a play area attached to the gym where the children can have fun while you exercise as well as a games room. Childminders can always be arranged at an extra cost.

Come mealtimes, the wholesome, delectable fare, freshly prepared by Jaci's dedicated chefs from seasonal produce and meats, will be a treat for your taste buds. Being family-friendly, the chefs also cater to the younger ones, serving popular dishes like spaghetti bolognaise, hot dogs, chips, home-made hamburgers, vegetables, and salads. Brunch and high tea are served in the main lounge. And as Jaci’s promises fireside starlit dining as often as possible, evening meals are served in the Lodge’s Boma, weather permitting. Should you be seeking an elite wedding venue in the heart of the African bushveld, you can rest assured Jaci's experienced staff will ensure your “special day” is every bit as magical and memorable as you imagined.

Jaci's is situated at an ideal spot overlooking an established and well used water hole, under a grove of Tamboti trees, on the edge of the Marico River. The main complex is different, open plan, curved around a huge anthill, under shady trees overlooking the water hole and on the banks of the Marico River.Meals come from an ultra modern kitchen, spotless, in full view of the dining area. Dinners are eaten outside around the open fire in the boma under the stars, or out in the bush on a "braai", surrounded by nature.

Upstairs there is a quiet reading space. There is also a well-stocked ethnic craft shop. Jaci's Safari Lodge now has a fully equipped gym situated between Jaci's Safari Lodge and Jaci's Tree lodge as well as a kiddies play area, overlooking the river.

There are only eight double rooms and the exclusive Nare Suite in this "must see", malaria free destination. Each one faces out over a dry river-bed which acts as a walkway for game on its way to and from the water hole. They each have a "tented" interior, walls of local stone and a cool thatch roof, for giving that special African bush feeling. A charming built in, en-suite hand-made rock bath with an outdoor "safari" shower, and fans to keep a gentle breeze flowing. Between the early morning and evening game drives and walks, there is a cool swimming pool overlooking the river. Lie in a hammock, sip an ice-cold drink, watch the birds, the butterflies and beasts, relax, unwind. The day, the place, the ambiance are yours, in peace.

Walking Safaris
:
With our walking-trails-qualified guides you can enjoy a 3 to 4 hour walk through the Madikwe bushveld.
We recommend a reasonable level of fitness as walks could vary between 5km and 10km.
Subject to a walking guide being available.

Accompanied by an expert walking-trails guide, guests can explore parts of Madikwe Game Reserve on foot. You may not spot many of the larger animal species (although you will almost certainly see their spoor), but you will learn so much more about the relationship between flora and fauna in the African bush, making it an unforgettable experience for all your senses.

The focus of a walking safari is the things you may miss on a game drive: the smaller animals, insects and birds, surrounding trees and grasses, with a spotlight on animal spoor and dung, small flowers and plants, bird calls and the aromatic smells of herbs and shrubs.

Tips and tricks
  • We recommend a reasonable level of fitness, as walks vary between 5km and10km over three to four hours.
  • The guide will match the pace of the slowest person in the group, so there’s no need to worry about having to keep up.
  • No guests under the age of 16 years are allowed on walking safaris.
  • Opt for neutral-coloured clothing, and shorts in summer and long trousers in winter.
  • Wear comfortable, closed walking boots and socks, and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Don’t forget your sunblock.
  • Try to carry as little as possible – stick to a small daypack containing your camera, binoculars and notebook.
  • Your guide will carry a first-aid kit, water, a radio for emergencies and toilet paper.
