Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge | African Safaris

5 Star Madikwe Game Reserve image
Madikwe Hills is tucked away among huge boulders under a grove of ancient Tamboti trees in the heart of the magnificent Big 5 Madikwe Game Reserve. This exclusive wilderness safari destination comprises the larger Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge and Little Madikwe Hills, a separate family-friendly camp.

Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge offers ten deluxe glass-fronted suites spread across the hillside to ensure optimal seclusion. Each spacious thatched suite features a separate bedroom with a king-sized four-poster bed draped in mosquito netting, a cosy sitting room with a giant slate-clad fireplace, an opulent bathroom, indoor and outdoor showers, and a raised wooden verandah with a plunge pool from where you can enjoy unrivalled views of the surrounding landscape. Additional facilities include air- conditioning, fans, and a fully-stocked bar fridge.

What’s more, the Honeymoon Suite has an irresistible claw-foot tub concealed in an outdoor corner where you can indulge in a tranquil rejuvenating soak under the vast starlit night skies.

The enchanting atmosphere of this premier Lodge is further enhanced by the lamp-lit suspended wooden walkways that connect each suite to the main guest hub. Here you will find an open-plan lounge with satellite TV as well as a bar, wine cellar, library, and dining space. And the massive gnarled trunks of Leadwood trees holding up the vaulted ceiling, the beautiful artwork, and eclectic Afro-chic décor are sure to make a lasting impression. However, guests should note that children aged 10 or younger are not permitted at the Private Game Lodge.

The terraced viewing deck is the ideal spot from which to observe the resident wildlife making their way to and from the waterhole or evade the heat with a dip in the crystal- clear swimming pool. If you feel the need to touch base with the outside world, there is a fixed line internet connection in the library and free Wi-Fi in the library and the lounge.

Come mealtimes, expect to enjoy a seductive gastronomic experience where every dish is freshly prepared from the finest locally sourced and imported ingredients. Traditional full English and continental breakfasts, and light lunches are served on the main Lodge deck while the delectable dinners are served al fresco in the customary Boma, silver service in the elegant dining space, or around the crackling fire on the pool deck.

Intimate candle-lit dinners can be arranged for couples in the privacy of your suite. Adventurous bush breakfasts and dinners are also an option for larger gatherings. Complete your meal with a bottle or two from the Lodge’s extensive choice of South African wines.

Madikwe Hills provides guests plenty to explore the spectacular biodiversity of the world-renowned Madikwe Game Reserve. Activities include sunrise and sunset game drives in 4X4 safari vehicles, nature trails, birdwatching excursions, and photography forays in the company of expert rangers.

For an even more thrilling up close and personal bushveld encounter, you can reserve a private couple’s safari. Younger guests are bound to enjoy Madikwe Hills’ interactive Junior Ranger programme which is designed to be enlightening and instill in them an appreciation of nature through a series of fun outdoor adventures.

When it comes to spending some downtime, an indulgent treatment in the comfort of the Wellness Centre and Spa is the perfect way to end another fabulous day on safari. Alternatively, get your pulse racing with a session in the Lodge’s well-equipped gym. Or browse the curio shop for a memento of your stay in this untamed bushveld terrain.

Little Madikwe Hills Private Camp lies some distance from the main Lodge. The Private Camp offers an ultra-luxurious self-contained two-bedroomed villa with the option of booking the ninth and tenth suites of the Private Game Lodge if need be, making it ideal for family and group breakaways of four to eight guests, of all ages.

This exclusive-use family-friendly Camp boasts two en-suite double bedrooms, one with a Venetian bath, plus a sitting room, dining area, and state-of- the-art kitchen all of which open onto the expansive wooden deck complete with sunbeds and a large swimming pool where you can enjoy the utter peace of Madikwe Game Reserve undisturbed. You may even be fortunate enough to see some elephant action at the waterhole below.

Extra amenities include a Venetian bath in the master suite, indoor and outdoor showers, mosquito nets, air-conditioning, fans, multiple fireplaces, and a small but satisfactory wine selection.

With a dedicated game drive vehicle, field guide, butler/childminder, and chef at your service, Little Madikwe Hills Private Camp allows you the luxury of setting the pace of your safari getaway. And when you’re not out discovering Madikwe’s amazing diversity of bird- and wildlife, you can retreat to the entertainment centre which has a small library, satellite TV, DVD and CD selection, children’s games, and free Wi-Fi.

An Exceptional Safari Experience in the Madikwe Game Reserve
Traversing over 75 000 hectares, Madikwe Game Reserve is where the plains still team with game and the acacia savannah symbolizes a paragon of beauty. Madikwe Hills is in the middle of the Reserve, giving you a huge advantage on game drives.

The malaria-free Madikwe Reserve is home not only to the ‘Big 5’ of Africa, but also to a wealth of other fascinating creatures, including the rare Wild Dog. Our team at Madikwe Hills looks forward to showing you Africa’s wonderful wildlife, and to fulfilling your every wish. Wildlife can be viewed on game drives, walking safaris, and from the privacy of your suite deck.

Game Drives & Bush Walks

Explore the wonders of the African bush in state-of-the-art open game vehicles with bucket seats ensuring your optimum safety and comfort. Knowledgeable and professional rangers conduct early morning and late afternoon, or evening game drives in search of Africa’s big game and smaller wildlife. On morning game drives, should you be feeling energetic, you may choose to experience an up-close-and-personal glimpse of the African bush on foot with a gentle bush walk through the bush back to the Lodge. This experience provides exceptional close encounters with the smaller inhabitants of this wilderness. Due to the heat in summer, winter is the best time for walking safaris.

Wildlife Photography

Those with a passion for wildlife photography will be able to get various tips from their ranger on taking the perfect safari picture, while on their game drive. Our rangers are avid fans of photography, many of them having entered renowned international and local competitions with great results. Our rangers will be happy to assist in any way they can.

Private Safari Vehicles & Rangers
Make your safari experience exclusively yours by booking Little Madikwe where the experience is yours with no mixed groups, no competing for views with other guests, and no conflicting interests. You have maximum flexibility, comfort and wildlife viewing. Your safari time is yours and you decide the length of your drive, what animals you would like to see and where you would like to traverse (within the allocated traversing rights). Your ranger will be completely devoted to you and your party – answering all your questions and tailoring each experience to maximize your interests. This is fabulous for photography enthusiasts where the time is yours and the vehicle can be manoeuvred for you to get your perfect shot.

Should you wish to book a private vehicle as a Main Lodge guest, this can only be confirmed a few days prior to your safari as it is dependent on Lodge occupancy. If three suites are booked in Main Lodge you automatically qualify for a private vehicle. Contact the Lodge or reservations for rates on private vehicles.

Remember, Little Madikwe comes with its own private vehicle and game ranger!

ADDRESS: Madikwe Hills Game Reserve North West Province, South Africa
GPS CO-ORDINATES: DO NOT follow your GPS after Zeerust. It will take you on the wrong roads.
SELF DRIVE: ±4.5 hours from Johannesburg & Pretoria.
(3.5 hours from Johannesburg/Pretoria to gate and 1 hour in the park as Madikwe Hills is situated in the middle of the reserve.)

VIA ZEERUST / ABJATERSKOP GATE
• From OR Tambo international get on the R21 towards Pretoria up to the Exit to the N1 Polokwane (about 37km).
• Get onto the N1 towards Polokwane and continue up to the N4 Rustenburg slipway (about 22km). Take the slipway onto the N4 towards Rustenburg (this is just after the Zambezi drive offramp). At Rustenburg continue on the N4 through Swartruggens towards Zeerust. Please Note: The N4 is a toll
road with four toll gates to Zeerust. Three before Rustenburg and one just after Swartruggens.
• In Zeerust make a RIGHT TURN at the ABSA bank in Main Street, towards Gaborone/Madikwe. Refuel here as there is no fuel in the Madikwe Reserve.
• After approximately 83km you will see the Abjaterskop Entrance into the Reserve on your RIGHT.
• Once you enter the Park there is about 32km of dirt road to the Lodge. Keep to the speed limit of 40km/h and watch out for the ditches on the tar  sections, you will damage your car if you speed!!
• Once through the gate, continue straight for 10.8km (the road will become tarred after a few km’s) until you find a T-Junction. TURN LEFT (There will be a sign stating Derdepoort, left)
• After 2km TURN RIGHT at the sign saying Park Admin (if the road became dirt again you went too far)
• Drive for 1km, past the entrance to Park Admin and TURN LEFT at the sign saying Derdepoort, Left

 > 3km later there will be a big Palm Tree on your left
 > 2.7km later you will reach the 4 way crossing
• The road will split immediately after the 4 way crossing. Keep to the RIGHT.

• Carry on straight on this road for 10.1km until you find a 4 way crossing. (you will see the following during the 10.1kms:)
> After about 500m the tar will end.
 > After +- 2.5km you will pass Mosetlha’s entrance to your left.
 > After about 1.5km you will go down a steep hill (once again tarred, in between two mountains – watch out for Klipspringers, small antelope).
 > 3km later there will be a big Palm Tree on your left.
 > 2.7km later you will reach the 4 way crossing.
• The road will split immediately after the 4 way crossing. Keep to the RIGHT.
• After 1.4km the road will join again and 1.2km after the join you need to TURN LEFT – there is a sign saying “Etali, Ukutula and Madikwe Hills”.
• After 2.5km the road splits – KEEP LEFT
• Drive for 1.9km, passing Ukuthula entrance and Etali Entrance and TURN LEFT in front of the “Madikwe Hills” sign (brass letters on a wooden log).

LEGALITY OF FOREIGN WEDDINGS IN SOUTH AFRICA
The law in South Africa requires a foreign couple to attend an appointment at the Department of Home Affairs before they can be legally married in South Africa. Since this is quite a cumbersome task for someone on safari, we suggest that you process all legal marriage documents in your home country and enjoy your ceremony on safari in a more traditional way
Enjoy a unique spa treatment based on the study of Africa, Africology, which encapsulate the behaviour, experiences and the healing potential of Africa. Africology brings ancient wisdom to today’s world, by using some of South Africa’s indigenous healing plants, namely Rooibos, Aloe Ferox, Marula ane African potato.
